Internet Searching Practice

Browsing with the Subject Directory, Librarians Index to the Internet

  1. From the Pershing Library website (http://www.pershinglibrary.org ) click on Internet Searching, then on Librarians Index to the Internet (the first icon under Subject Directories.)
  2. Your task is to find a possible topic and websites that would be helpful for Science Fair to use as resources for your topic.
  3. Beginning with the broad subject Science and Technology browse until you find narrower topics and websites that would be interesting and helpful for a science project.
  4. Note the topic you chose and the addresses of several helpful websites related to your topic.

Using the Search Engine Google

  1. From the Pershing Library website homepage, scroll down and click on Google.
  2. You are doing a report on Martin Luther, founder of the Lutheran Church, and you need biographical information.
  3. Type "Martin Luther" in the search box and click Google Search. Who are most of the results about? ____________________ Now type "Martin Luther" –King in the search box, and Google Search. Are your results now more on target?
  4. Suppose you are doing a project on the Alamo. Try a new search by typing in Alamo as your key word. How many hits are found? Are most of the results about the Alamo? Narrow your search by typing Alamo +battle. Are your hits more on target now?
  5. Underneath the Google symbol, click on "Images," leaving your terms, Alamo +battle. Could these images be helpful?

 

Using the Metasearch Engine, Dogpile

  1. From the Internet Searching page of the Pershing Library website, click on Dogpile.
  2. You are looking for information about the Caddo Indians.
  3. First type Caddo in the box and click on fetch.
  4. Are your results on target?
  5. Now type Caddo Indians.
  6. Are the results better?
  7. Look for helpful pictures of the Caddo Indians by selecting Images from the drop-down menu that is below the word fetch and clicking on fetch.
  8. Now you want to learn about other Texas tribes.
  9. Broaden your search by typing Texas Indians.
  10. Name four other tribes of Texas Indians for which you found information.

Using the Search Engine AltaVista

  1. From the Pershing Internet Searching page, click on the Alta Vista icon.
  2. You are interested in adopting a golden retriever or a Dalmatian. Use good search strategies to look for an organization in the Houston area that rescues and offers adoptions for dogs of these breeds.
  3. First type the terms "golden retriever" OR Dalmatian. Are your results on target?
  4. Try narrowing your search by typing "golden retriever" OR Dalmatian AND adopt*.
  5. Check your results. Would you like organizations closer to home?
  6. Narrow your search further by typing "golden retriever" OR Dalmatian AND adopt* AND Houston Texas.
  7. Name at least two websites that would help you find the pet you want.

Use any remaining time to conduct searches of your own using Boolean operators, quotation marks, and wildcards.
